Welcome to our Neighborhood
Flagstaff is a melting pot of implants from all over that bring a diversity of ideas and adventurous spirits. Flagstaff locals have many sayings such as "want to see the weather change, just wait five minutes" and you may see stickers that just say "WTF" which stands for Welcome to Flagstaff. Flagstaff is also home of the largest continuous Ponderosa pine forest in the United States and is also the only tundra biome in Arizona found on top of the San Francisco Peaks.
About Us
About the City
Flagstaff has moved from town to City and that brings some great things and a little not so great, our traffic on the west side can get a little backed up, but still nothing like the big cities. We have a fair amount of chain stores but still a lot of locally owned as well, so you can find the familiar like Sams Club, Target, Walmart, and more, but there are also lots of local stores as well. You can find some great little shops in downtown Flag for instance.
While we have many wonders to see, one of our challenges is in housing. The costs of living in Flagstaff is very high, and the costs of rentals are also a big challenge even for those in middle-class income brackets. In our neighborhood, there are trailers where people live who just can't find anything better that is affordable. If you notice, many have fixed them up with roses and other little touches. Please know that our town has a diversity of hard-working people who also love all the beauty Northern Arizona has to offer. We like to say that we are in a living neighborhood, meaning we don't have an HOA, and the houses all have their own uniqueness. What you find is a neighborhood where you might hear kids laughing as they ride their bikes, or the ice cream truck going by, or someone having a BBQ down the street, but it is generally a quiet neighborhood and we have great neighbors.
Our Chickens and Pets
The city encourages community gardens and we plant sustainable garden plants as much as decorative ones in our landscaping. Backyard chickens are also allowed and many of us have small flocks that provide healthy eggs.
Of note, our hens like most chickens, occasionally like to tell the world when they lay an egg. You can occasionally hear their "song". We do put a radio in the coup for them, but just know that occasionally they will brag for a few minutes, but they are sweet hens. Please let us know if you would like to pet them. We have also supplied a treat box and you may throw them some treats in the morning or whenever you would like the really make them happy.
You may occasionally see our dogs in the front yard. They are both rescues, Zero is a Maltese, Shih Tzu we think, and about 8 years old, Zatanna is a French Bulldog/ Boston Terrier and she is 3. Both are wonderful dogs.
Note: The Flagstaff Nature Suite is separate from the main house in everything but central heat. and we do have a cat, however, we use high-quality furnace filters. We've also installed MERV 8 Electrostatic Triple Filtration Vent filters in the Suite.
Journey to Completion
It all started when we had family that was allergic to our pets. We needed a place for them to stay that was completely separate from the main part of the house. Since the room would be sitting empty most of the year we thought, why not share it and make it a fun place to visit by celebrating all the wonderful outdoor features of Flagstaff? Thus began a three-year remodel, doing almost all of the work ourselves with a little help from my sons (thanks sons!.)
